Introductory and taster sessions

Any of these talks can be tailored to dance teachers, dance students or those who support young dancers (parent/guardians and pastoral staff). Talks can be delivered in person or via Zoom and involve lecture-based delivery as well as tasks and interaction. Ideally utilised as CPD session content.

In signing up to any of these courses you are also committing to attend a follow up question/discussion session via zoom within 6 months of the original session.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ADOLESCENT DANCER

Aimed at those who want an in depth introduction to the topic of growth and maturation and its implications or those who feel they would benefit from an update on their knowledge in this area.

2 hour webinar, liv e or pre-recorded

Includes…

  • Reflection on own experiences
  • Overview of the biological basis for change
  • Introduction to physiological and psychological development
  • Implications for performance and health
  • Discussion around of best practice for negotiating these changes.
  • If pre-recorded – recording available to purchase and access for a limited time.
  • Follow up session on zoom for questions and discussion – 2 hours within 6 months of introductory session.

INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT IN DANCE

Aimed at those who want an introduction to the topic of psychological development in the context of dance – exploring social, emotional and cognitive development from childhood to adolescence.

Half-day course (4hrs) via zoom or in person

Lecture-based with some discussion

Includes…

  • Introduction to psychological development and important concepts such as autonomy
  • Psychological development in childhood and adolescence – exploring key developmental tasks, attachment, emotional competence, social and cognitive development
  • Discussion of how to work in developmentally appropriate ways with children in dance at different ages and stages of development
  • Bringing it all together – physical and psychological development in the studio
  • Follow up session on zoom for questions and discussion – 1 hour within 6 months of session.
  • Run once a year through the adolescent dancer – please contact for times.

  • Introduction to physiological development in childhood, fundamental movement skills, motor skill development
  • Introduction to physiological development in adolescence – the growth spurt, implications for motor skills, balance and coordination
  • Discussion of how to work in developmentally appropriate ways with children in dance at different ages and stages of development
  • Bringing it all together – physical and psychological development in the studio
  • Follow up session on zoom for questions and discussion – 1 hour within 6 months of session.

MY DANCING BODY: A WORKSHOP FOR DANCE STUDENTS

Aimed at adolescent dance students who want to explore the implications, challenges and benefits of the adolescent body in dance. Informal workshop style session with interactive tasks, reflection and discussion. Starting a dialogue as opposed to lecturing students.

2 hour live workshop session

Includes…

  • Reflection on own experiences
  • Tasks to explore challenges, benefits and implications of physical and psychological change
  • Group discussion to co-create ways to overcome or manage challenges
  • Provision of resources and signposting to good sources of information for further learning
  • Follow up visit for questions and discussion – 2 hours within 6 months of session.

THE GROWING DANCER: AN INTRODUCTION FOR PARENTS AND CARERS OF YOUNG DANCERS

Provides parents and carers of young dancers an insight into the growing body in the context of dance. Introduces physical and psychological development and how these changes can impact a young dancer and how best to support that young person. Ideal for induction weeks for parents of children in full-time training, as a standalone education session for parents, and for parents of recreational dance students. Informal lecture style session with opportunity for questions, reflection and discussion.
